WHAT ARE EXCESS CHARGES?

Excess charges are surcharges that some states allow your doctor to charge above and beyond what Medicare will reimburse. Most doctors do not charge excess charges. Excess charges are limited to 15% beyond what Medicare pays.  If this concerns you, Medicare Plan F or G may be a better option for you vs. Medicare Plan C, as these two plans cover excess charges not covered by Plan A or B.

MORE ABOUT EXCESS CHARGES

If a Medicare doctor doesn't accept assignment rates, they can add an excess charges. However, this excess charge cannot exceed beyond the 15% allowed Medicare charge. Also, some states prevent doctors from charging excess charges. People who live in these states will then find that Plan C functions exactly like Plan F, which is the most comprehensive Medicare supplement plan.
