Medicare Plan A,  also referred to as Medigap Plan A, is the most basic Medicare Supplement. Medicare Supplement Plan A covers the 20% of outpatient medical care traditional Medicare doesn't cover.  Medicare Plan A also provides Medicare Part B coinsurance or co-payment coverage.

Don't confuse Medicare Plan A with Medicare Part A.

People can get confused about whether Plan A and Part A are the same. It is not. Medicare Supplement Plan A is one of the Supplement plans, which helps fill in gaps in Medicare. Medicare Part A is your original Medicare hospital coverage.

What is covered under Medicare Supplement Plan A?

Medicare Plan A is the most basic of the 10 Medicare Supplement Insurance plans. Medicare Plan A covers what Medicare beneficiaries require, including 100% coverage of the costs associated with the following: 


  • Medicare Part A coinsurance payments for inpatient hospital care (up to an additional 365 days after Medicare benefits are exhausted).
  • Medicare Part B required co-payment or coinsurance expenses
  • The first three pints of blood used in a medical procedure
  • Medicare Part A hospice care co-insurance expenses, or required co-payment

If you qualify for Medicare early due to a disability, Medigap Plan A is also the insurance policy for purchase during your Open Enrollment Period without underwriting.


It is important to be aware that the cost of this plan for people under age 65, can be up to 3 times what a 65-year-old individual will pay. This increase is due to people who qualify for Medicare early, due to a disability, typically have medical costs higher than the average 65 or older person. For this reason, people on Medicare disability may want to review Medicare Advantage plans for cost savings.


For disabled people over age 65, Medicare Plan A will be priced as any other Supplement, but not many people over age 65 select it. Generally, these individuals select a more comprehensive plans like Plan F and Plan G that provide fuller coverage
